Christmas Season

Tis the season to be jolly fa la la la la la la la la...

Tis also the season to share the gospel! To be fair, so is every other season but it does seem like at this time of the year people are just so much happier to hear about Jesus. So we really want to make the most of the opportunities that arise.

Therefore, we would really appreciate lots of prayer for the following events that will be taking place over the next three weeks:

Wednesday 7th: Beer & Carols- This is an event run by the chaplaincy but it's also something we're encouraging CU members to take friends to. It will be a really relaxed event where we can just go to the pub and sing some carols with our mates. We really believe in relational evangelism so this is something that can really help us share the gospel with our friends in the future.

Monday 12th: We'll be having our Christmas social but making the most out of the opportunity! The plan is to all go out for a meal but bring a friend along . It'll be a really nice time just to celebrate Christmas together but we will also be having a short gospel talk from Steve Baraniak (our breakaway and 'Uncover Jesus' week speaker) .

Wednesday 14th: This is the DMU carol service which the CU will help host.  It'll be a really nice traditional celebration of Christmas but also a great way to share the gospel with our mates!

Thursday 15th: Now this is the long awaited CU barn dance! This is primarily just a social- we do love our barn dances! But as I said, we think relationships in evangelism are so important so sometimes social events like this just really lay the foundation for us to share the gospel with our friends at a later date!

So please do be praying for the success of these events.

Thank you all for your support and prayer- it is all really appreciated!

God bless,
Jennie (President of DMUCU)

CU Update

Hello everyone!

I trust you are all well.

I just thought I'd give you an update on the work of the CU at the moment. Our first years are still fantastic! The attendance to our main meetings isn't dwindling as it has over the past few years, and so many of them are being real active members of our mission team.

We've heard some great news that CU members are looking to do UNCOVER with their friends or are at least finding more opportunities to share Jesus with them.

For those of you who don't know, UNCOVER is a simple series of six studies of Luke's gospel. It's been given to us by the UCCF this year as an easy method to teach our friends about Jesus. To see more about it you can watch this video http://www.uccf.org.uk/media/uncover/.

In regards to our larger outreach methods, we have two events in two weeks time that we would really appreciate your prayer for!

The first is a lunchbar on the 22nd November where we will be answering the question 'what's so amazing about grace?' The second is an evening event on the 24th November where we will be looking at 'what if my good deeds don't count?' These are linked events, so we are hoping that our guests will come along to both to get a deeper understanding of the Bibles chapter we are looking at; Galatians 3.

At the moment we're unsure about whether we will get the rooms we need, and we wont find out until just before the event where we can go, so we're having  a bit of a dilemma as to what to put on our publicity. Please pray that God will use these events and bring people along despite these mishaps. It would really be appreciated!

God bless,
Jennie

Tea and Toast!

Hi There!
Last Saturday (30/10/11) the CU put on an evangelism event that engaged many of the students at DMU. This event was an opportunity to meet more students, chat to them about their lives and Jesus though giving them a cup of coffee and a chocolate spread sandwich as they leave the Students Union. This type of event enables us as the CU to chat to people we may have never spoken to. Many of these young people have consumed a large amount of alcohol in a night, but the affect is usually that they want to chat about things that otherwise they may have run away from. It may be absolutely exhausting (hanging around outside the Union Bar until 4am!) but, I’m sure lots of people who have doe Tea and Toast will say the same, it is so rewarding! God blesses us with fantastic conversations and the opportunities to meet new friends.
Please pray for the Christian Unions at both Universities, that they will have a servant heart to the Lord, being encouraged and challenged by His desires whilst at Uni. CU is a great opportunity for Christians (and non-Christians!) to get to know more about Jesus and why we need Him, so please pray that we will be able to continue the work.
If you have any questions about our work or CU in general, feel free to email me on evang@dmucu.org.
In Christ,
Emma

Final Fresher's Week Catch Up

Hi Everyone,

Well after an exhausting but exciting week, I'm pleased to say Fresher's week is over! Thank you everyone for all of your prayer and support throughout the week, it's been really appreciated.

It's such a privilege to serve God by being on the committee because you can see just so clearly how he works through us and provides for us. Though I must say I imagine it would be nice to just enjoy the events without having the concern of how they will turn out- when you have such a concern and God completely eradicates any need for such concern, it's a truly great feeling.

So, going back to Thursday evening. This was our first main CU meeting of the year. Through this we hoped to give the Fresher's an idea of what the CU mission team is about and how we run on a weekly basis. It was great to see how many people there were who were simply interested in either working for Jesus on campus or wanting to find out more about him, rather than being attracted to an event where they are given free food.

The worship that night was so powerful, you would have thought we had been singing together as a group for years. Also, the talk from our speaker, Paul, was fantastic and really got across the message of why we aim to reach out to our campus.

Moving onto yesterday, we had our 'Quiz night' again this was a really fun event and there were a few faces that I hadn't seen throughout the rest of the week which was fantastic. It's always great to see people who just may be having seeds planted in them, now we would just really appreciate your prayers for those seeds to have landed on good soil.

Our speaker, Steve, gave a talk that reached out to all kinds of people in the room. And if I didn't know Christ already I must say, he would have encouraged me to read the Bible and check him out.

This week was manic, but God has provided when we couldn't and he has fixed things that we didn't God has been so good. Fresher's week may be over but our mission isn't stopping so please do keep supporting us and praying for us.

God bless you all

Wednesday Catch-up

Hello everyone!

Last night was incredible, I was very much reminded of the feeding of the 5,000... though we sadly didn't have 5,000 people along to hear the gospel- we had around 80 attend our 'Fish and Chips' event. Still we are so pleased with this turn out as there were lots of unfamiliar faces of international students and I suspect some other British students who have never thought about Christ before.

Our speaker, Paula, gave a great demonstration of Jesus' sacrifice for us as well as telling everyone what it means to be a Christian.

Though we were so exhausted God really provided for us, there was plenty of food and I think it was really important that those of us in charge really had the message hit home how beautiful and trust-worthy God is. He will never let us down!

Tonight, we're having our first main meeting of the year with worship, teaching and prayer. This will be a great opportunity to show the Fresher's what DMUCU is like normally. Please pray that tonight that they all grasp the fact that we are a mission team and it would also be great if you could pray for them to get involved whole heartedly in serving God on campus!

God bless,

Tuesday Catch-Up

Good afternoon everyone!

Well I knew people liked cake but WOW!

Our God is such a prayer answering God it's incredible. Yesterday we prayed for our Pudding party in the evening as well as for the success of our international cafe that is being set up. Well talk about killing two birds with one stone.

Not only did we have an amazing turn out to our event- of lots of new faces (some Christians and I think some who were not) but we also had a fantastic turn out of international students. So, we were completely able to advertise the cafe to them.

The talk from our staff worker, Matthew, seemed also to be a hit. His honesty and casual approach seemed to spark some interest (or at least facial expressions that showed interest) from our guests. We would really appreciate it if you would pray that even if the immediate reaction from people wasn't a positive one, that it would be a seed planted in their hearts at least.

Now, tonight we are hosting our event 'Fish and Chips', I feel it's self explanatory but just in case- we are getting fish and chips for all of our guests to eat while listening to our gospel based talk. Lots of people have shown an interest in this event which is amazing because the more people to hear the gospel the better. However, I must admit that there are some concerns about how much such an event will cost. Please really pray that God would provide us with the finances so we wont struggle with them after this event. We are really praying for a miracle here.

Still if anyone would like to donate some much needed money to our mission. Please do let me know, email me at president@dmucu.org.

God bless you all,
Jennie

Monday Catch-Up

So yesterday we started with a bang... well more of a strum/shout/... I don't know how to describe the sound of someone playing a keyboard...maybe that is a bang!

We kicked off our Fresher's week with our Music Night last night, filling the room with fairy lights and lamps, scattering gospels around and putting a variety of snacks on each table seemed to create a nice cosy atmosphere for the Freshers. And praise God, there were Freshers!

After the event we headed to the Western pub- as is practically a tradition with DMUCU- to socialize a bit more  and some of the Fresher's even decided to join us there which was fantastic.

We really want to praise God for his provision. For a while we weren't entirely sure how many performers we'd have or whether there would be enough to fill up the evening, but two of the guys from the DMU music society turned up and played for us!

On a more personal note, I was completely blown away by God yesterday. I have always been a real stress head and control freak- though since God came into my life about 3 years ago I've been seeing a change in that. However, I've never had such a big a test for my stress levels as this. And I must say they are practically non-existent! Not everything has gone to plan but not once has God let us down and not once has he let me feel panicked or worried. I found myself telling people I was stressed when they asked how I was just out of habit and had to change my mind saying 'actually no I'm not, I thought I would be but I'm really not'. So I personally really want to thank God there for being such a great Father :)

So moving on with today, we have more flyering to do to advertise our events so if you're reading this please pray that we get a good response from people, and that when we don't we wont be disheartened or feel personally rejected.

Then later on tonight at 7pm we have our pudding party! I'm really excited about this one as it's always very popular and it was the first CU event I ever went to. Lets face it people love cake! If anyone is still available to donate us with puddings/sweets that would still be amazing. You could get in contact with someone you know from the CU to get them or drop them off in the DMU chaplaincy on the second floor of the campus centre. When flyering I had a request from a third year non-Christian that I work with for another pudding party- lets pray she comes and has an opportunity to hear the gospel!

God bless you all,
Jennie
